Social Work Competencies

Effective social work practice is premised on evidence-based practice, advocacy, ethical professionalism, and cultural competence. Social workers should adhere to the ethics, advocate for human rights, and contest unjust systems of oppression to create social, environmental, and economic justice. Social workers translate research into practice, engage in policy development, and establish healthy partnerships with people, their families, and communities. Practice process comprises careful evaluation, strategic interventions, and ongoing measurement of the outcome of the interventions. These are the key capabilities required of social workers to enable their clients, bring about change at the systems level, and enhance social justice. Ethical professionalism, cultural competence, advocacy, and evidence-based practice inform good social work practice. Morally correct principles must be followed, heterogeneity must be respected, and social workers must address system injustices to bring about environmental, economic, and social justice. They develop research into practice, engage in policy-making, and develop strong relationships with clients, their families, and groups. Systematic assessment, planning interventions, and ongoing monitoring of the practice process can maximize intervention effectiveness. They are necessary in facilitating clients, bringing about systemic change, and advocating for justice in society by acquiring these fundamental competencies.
